Neck Pain Q & A

What might be causing my neck pain?

Neck pain is most likely to arise when you injure the structures that make up your neck (cervical spine), or they deteriorate with age and overuse. Tension and stress are also responsible for many instances of neck pain and stiffness.

Your neck has less support than other parts of your spine, so it's particularly vulnerable to damage of the ligaments, tendons, bones, muscles, cervical discs, and nerves.

Frequent causes of neck pain include:

  • Muscle strains
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Herniated cervical discs
  • Facet joint syndrome
  • Cervical radiculopathy (pinched nerves)
  • Bone spurs
  • Osteoporosis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Cervical spinal stenosis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Although it's less likely, neck pain is sometimes a symptom of meningitis (a brain tissue infection).

How is my neck pain diagnosed?

Dr. Attias begins his diagnosis by checking your medical history and current symptoms before performing a physical exam. He feels the structures in your neck and asks you to move your head in certain ways so he can assess your range of motion.

To verify or eliminate a potential diagnosis, you may need to undergo diagnostic tests such as X-rays, an MRI, or a CT scan.

Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity tests may also be necessary to evaluate the activity of nerves in or near your neck. If imaging tests don't identify the cause of your pain, Dr. Attias can use nerve block injections to help locate its source.

What treatments can help with neck pain?

Initially, the treatment program Dr. Attias creates for you focuses on moderate approaches to neck pain, such as physical therapy, massage, manual manipulation, and activity modification.

If, after several months, you're still struggling with neck pain, Dr. Attias offers advanced interventions that might make the difference. These include:

  • Regenerative medicine
  • Steroid injections
  • Selective nerve root blocks
  • Medial branch blocks
  • Medial branch radiofrequency neurotomy

For the most persistent cases of neck pain that aren't responding to other approaches, Dr. Attias can implant devices such as a spinal cord stimulator or intrathecal pain pump.

Spinal cord stimulation uses electrical energy to disrupt the pain signals going to your brain. A pain pump delivers regular doses of prescription medication to the source of your pain.

Both systems are controllable using a remote device, so you can increase or decrease the treatment at any time to suit your pain levels.
